What does the engine light in my car mean?

I drive a 1981 ford granada and recently while driving the engine light will come on and usually will turn off and back on again. This car obviously doesnt have the computer chip in it like newer cars do that tell you the problem. What might be wrong with it? The car doesnt seem to drive any differently while its on.
I just checked the oil and it is very low, might that have something to do with it? The car only has 49k miles on it.

the light could be faulty,better be safe than sorry get it checked.
