how do i take off the back sprocket on a bmx bike.?
I got the front sprocket off but i cant get the back one off, help.
Bob A has pointed you in the right direction for sure. If you notice while looking at the side of your freewheel (the rear gear on a bmx) you’ll find that there are some recessed slots – these slots are generally rectangular in shape – some have 2 others have 4. Knowing what yours look like should help you determine which tool you’ll need. The tool will have a hole through the middle allowing your axle to fit through it. Place the tool onto the axle making sure it fits snugly into the recessed slots. Next, you’ll notice that your axle is sticking out of the end of the tool, now screw your axle nut onto the axle and bring it close to the tool yet not tight – you’ll need the tool to wiggle a bit to allow your freewheel to back off as you loosen it. It is of high value that you have a bench mount vice handy in which to hold the tool securely for the next step, though you can probably manage with a real big crescent wrench too. If you have a vice, place the tool, which is now attached to your wheel, into the vice and secure it tightly. Now grab the wheel on each side and turn it counter clockwise – virtually unscrewing it from the tool. The moment the freewheel breaks loose for the wheel, stop what you are doing and take the axle nut off the tool, otherwise you’ll get it stuck. Now return the wheel, with the tool on it, into the vice and continue unwinding it until the freewheel is off. That’s it!
